Building the future

Upstander Programs encourage participants to become aware of their potential to make a positive difference, and offer practical tools for standing up against racism, bullying and prejudice by empowering participants to take positive action – in the schoolyard, workplaces, and in our communities.

Our Upstander Programs educate participants on how to counter the dangers of racism, prejudice, discrimination and bullying.   You’ll be an integral part of the team at Diversity Australia

As a volunteer with Diversity Australia you will take on an important and special role.

You’ll find it incredibly rewarding to deliver the Upstander message directly to participants and you’ll know you’re making a real difference in the community.

There’s something for everyone

Just as diverse as our volunteers themselves, we have a range of volunteer opportunities available:

  • Upstander Program delivery: You’ll get the chance to visit schools and workplaces across Australia, working directly with participants to educate and promote Upstander action in our communities.
  • Administration: You’ll work with our team to deliver results behind-the-scenes: assembling school packs, printing and organising resources for Upstander Programs, contacting schools to make and confirm bookings, and generally supporting our day-to-day operations.
  • Fundraising, marketing and events: You’ll help build our profile and raise funds so we can continue delivering Upstander Programs and extend our reach.
  • Projects and workgroups: You’ll contribute your skills and expert knowledge to the ongoing development and expansion of our Upstander programs, or help other volunteers broaden and deepen their skills.
  • Governance: You’ll share your skills to ensure we have sound financial and legal governance.

You will receive training upfront, along with extensive ongoing guidance and professional development throughout your volunteering journey.

Have you got what it takes?

We welcome volunteers above 18 years of age from all backgrounds, ethnicities and religious beliefs.  All that’s required is a strong desire to create real change and a commitment to educate and inspire Australians in schools and workplaces to be Upstanders in their communities.   Ideally, you’ll be a natural, flexible communicator. Whilst not required, experience in education, social work or community awareness is always welcome.

For diversity practices to be successful, you also need to facilitate an inclusive work culture. Here are some ways employers can build or improve upon their diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.

Fearless Leaders

Social cohesion refers to the elements that bring and hold people together in society.

In a socially cohesive society all individuals and groups have a sense of belonging, participation, inclusion, recognition and legitimacy.

Social cohesive societies are not necessarily demographically homogenous.

Rather, by respecting diversity, they harness the potential residing in their societal diversity (in terms of ideas, opinions, skills, etc.).
